Search Engine Rank
Key Tips on How to Improve Your Rank in Search Engines

Search engine rank is of paramount importance to web designers and website managers all over the world. I have had tremendous success with this. The websites I currently manage average more than 5,000 visits per day from search engines, over 50% of our total visits. Our webpages are ranked number one in literally hundreds of key searches. Many successful websites whose programmers understand techniques to improve search engine rank get over half of their visits from searches on search engines.

Below are several key techniques that you can easily use to improve your search engine rank (also called search engine optimization or SEO) on any webpage. They are listed roughly in the order of importance based on my own experience. Unfortunately, the most important factor is also the most difficult to achieve – getting other websites to link to yours. The more websites linked to your webpage and website, the higher your rank. But following these guidelines will without doubt raise your rankings.

Before starting, you will need to choose two to five words you want to target for each individual webpage you post. These are called key words. Think about which key words people are most likely to type into their search engine that might bring them to your webpage. Most people don't use quotation marks in their searches, so it's generally best to target individual words rather than phrases. You can also use Google Trends service at this link to see which words are most commonly used in searches.

  1. Use your key target words in the document's title tag (<title> in html at the top of the coded page), which is what shows in the tab at the top of every webpage. This is clearly the most heavily weighted parameter besides number of websites linking to your webpage.
  2. In the body of the page, use your target words in the title of the text. Ideally start the text title with these words. If possible, repeat these words in a subtitle with some attractive variation.
  3. Use as large a font size as possible while still being attractive for your text title.
  4. Choose a URL (Internet address which goes after your main domain name) that uses as many of your target words as reasonable. You might also consider creating subfolders named with target words to increase your ranking, i.e. http://www.website.com/keyword/keywords-to-use
  5. Use the target words as frequently as possible in the text of the webpage without creating awkwardness. If your title or text is awkward to read, people are not likely to read your message or link to your webpage, which is the most important support you can get.
  6. In your <meta name="description" tag, use your target words, preferably before other words. Use them more than once if possible, but not more than two or three times, as the search engines are now penalizing for this. Remember that this is the line that people will read describing your webpage. It must be engaging enough to make someone want to actually click on your link and open the page. What you write here does not show up at all on the webpage, yet it is of crucial importance to getting visits through search engines.
  7. If you have images on your webpage, use as many of your keywords as possible without creating awkwardness in both the description of the image and the "alt" tag of the image.
  8. Make sure your webpages redirect to use www. in the URL for those who type a URL without the www. Search engines treat these separately, so it's best to have all webpages using www. To do so, add the below code to your .htaccess file:

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.
    RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]

As an example, take a look at the webpage I created at this link. In this document, I've targeted the words masons, freemasons, secret, and society. Notice that the URL contains these words. You'll also see how I've maximized the use of these two words without being too awkward. And the page usually shows up in the top 10 if you do a search on masons secret society or freemansons secret society.

You usually need to be ranked in the top 20 search listings to get any significant number of visits to your site. If you use the above techniques, you will most certainly be able to improve your ranking. Be aware the for most websites, it can take up to a month for Google to register any changes you've made, so be patient.
