Baby's first junk food: How companies prey on new parents
August 23, 2024, The Blaze
https://www.theblaze.com/align/study-baby-food-unhealthy...

Almost two-thirds of supermarket baby food is unhealthy while nearly all baby food labels contain misleading marketing claims designed to "trick" parents. Those are the conclusions of an eyebrow-raising study in which researchers at Australia's George Institute for Global Health analyzed 651 foods marketed for children ages 6 months to 36 months at 10 supermarket chains in the United States. The study ... found that 60% of the foods failed to meet nutritional standards set by the World Health Organization. In addition, 70% of the baby food failed to meet protein requirements, 44% exceeded total sugar recommendations, 25% failed to meet calorie recommendations, and 20% exceeded recommended sodium limits set by the WHO. The most concerning products were snack foods and pouches. "Research shows 50% of the sugar consumed from infant foods comes from pouches, and we found those were some of the worst offenders,” said Dr. Elizabeth Dunford, senior study author. Sales of such convenient baby food pouches soared 900% in the U.S. in the past 13 years. Consumption of processed foods in early childhood can set lifelong habits of poor eating that could lead to obesity, diabetes, and some cancers. The study also found that 99.4% of the baby food analyzed had misleading marketing claims on the labels that violated the WHO's promotional guidelines. On average, products contained four misleading marketing claims; some had as many as eleven.

Note: Big Food profits immensely as American youth face a growing health crisis, with close to 30% prediabetic, one in six youth obese, and over half of children facing a chronic illness. Nearly 40% of conventional baby food contains toxic pesticides. Read our latest Substack on the inspiring remedies to the chronic illness crisis.

The junk food industry is targeting our children
April 20, 2024, The Hill
https://thehill.com/opinion/healthcare/4605533-the-junk-food-industry...

A 30-second commercial seems harmless. However, new research from my lab shows that food marketing to kids is more than a nuisance: it’s a key driver of poor diets. Food marketing impacts what kids like, buy and eat — increasing the risk of dental caries, obesity and type 2 diabetes. Like tobacco, tighter regulation of junk food marketing to children is needed to protect their health. This week, a bill introduced in the Senate, the Childhood Diabetes Reduction Act, proposes a crucial step forward by proposing limits on the types of techniques used to target kids ... as well as limits on where such ads can appear. The bill would cut kids’ exposure to the most harmful types of food marketing. Companies spend $14 billion each year on marketing to children, over 80 percent of which is for fast food and other ultraprocessed foods like snacks, candy and sodas. In 2016, Chile restricted child-directed appeals and placement of ads on children’s programming for unhealthy products and banned their sale and promotion in schools. In 2018, the country began prohibiting unhealthy food ads on any television program between 6am – 10pm. These regulations cut kids’ exposure to unhealthy food marketing by over two-thirds. While the Chilean regulation is much more comprehensive than what is being proposed in the U.S., the Senate bill would still achieve important progress by reducing kids’ exposure to the types of targeted marketing most likely to hook them on products.

Police across US given new UFO handbook as they warn craft 'pose significant safety risks'
September 7, 2024, Daily Mail (One of the UK's Popular Newspapers)
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-13742439/Police-given...

Police chiefs of America's largest cities have published the first guide about UAPs, which details chilling encounters and how officers can report such incidents. The 11-page document warned that unidentified flying objects 'pose significant safety risks to law enforcement air support units,' urging teams to be vigilant when in helicopters. The report also highlights stories from officers who claimed to confront UFOs. The organization, called the Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA), includes nearly 80 executives from major US cities who work together to advance public safety through a range of initiatives, including community outreach, research and policy development and now, UFO investigations. The report ... includes links to various UAP reporting websites, urging officers to report any bizarre sightings. More interesting, the pages detail first-person stories from police officers who encountered unknown spacecraft while out in the field. An officer patrolling Blairsville, Georgia in November 2023 claimed to have witnessed green lights in the sky. 'I am a police officer and deputy sheriff. While on duty after dark, near the top of my windshield (frame of view) I witnessed movement in the sky (southbound direction of view),' the officer's report stated. 'Upon concentrating my focus, viewing through the low light, I was able to make out a triangle craft, with 3 dim green lights per side (just bright enough to assess size, shape, and movement).'

Ex-Pentagon official Luis Elizondo alleges US recovered nonhuman specimens: report
August 23, 2024, New York Post
https://nypost.com/2024/08/23/us-news/ex-pentagon-official-luis-elizondo...

“The United States has been involved in the recovery of objects, vehicles of unknown origin that are neither from our country or any other foreign country,” former senior US government intelligence Luis Elizondo told NewsNation. Elizondo claimed that one of the two spacecraft the Department of Defense has is from the alleged 1947 unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) crash in Roswell, New Mexico. “We as a nation have been interested in not only the vehicles themselves but the occupants of these vehicles; to include biological specimens. “We are not alone in this universe. The US government has been aware of that fact for decades.” Elizondo claims: “I saw a technical device that had been removed, excised by the Department of Veterans Affairs by a surgeon, a trained physician, from a US military service member who claimed to have a UAP encounter,” he told the outlet. “The physician claimed that the object tried to run on him or evade being excised.” Elizondo ... graduated from the University of Miami with majors in microbiology and immunology, with studies in parasitology. After a stint in the army, he claims to have “served as a special agent in counterintelligence” for the US and was tasked with helping protect “advanced aerospace technology” from falling into the wrong hands. In 2008, however, Elizondo claims he took “a new position at the Pentagon,” where he was later “approached by two individuals who were part of a program I hadn’t heard of before,” who knew his “background” and were considering him to join their “organization.” “After meeting the director and several other individuals, I agreed to take on a role in their program, which was called the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP), a niche program under the umbrella of AWSAPP,” he wrote. He would eventually make his way up the chain in the AATIP, where a “typical day” would be investigating UAP reports, “primarily from the Navy,” specifically in incidents where they “came dangerously close to our aircraft.”

Note: Elizondo once described intriguing accounts of radiation exposure and warping of space time that pilots have reported in the presence of UFOs. ‘I was the Pentagon’s UFO chief – I’ve held alien matter in my hands’
September 7, 2024, i News
https://inews.co.uk/news/science/pentagons-ufo-chief-alien-matter-hands...

Luis Elizondo [was the] director of the [Pentagon's] Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Programme (AATIP). He claims to have been told categorically by senior fellow researchers that the notorious Roswell incident in New Mexico in 1947 really did involve a UAP crash, perhaps involving two flying saucers – and that “four deceased non-human bodies” were recovered from the wreckage and examined. Asked what happened to these supposed bodies, he says on our video call: “We know where they were. We don’t know where they are.” He adds: “I’ve got to be careful what I say here, to not get in trouble – I still have my security clearance.” Other bodies have also been retrieved from subsequent incidents. He accuses major aerospace companies of trying to obtain crashed UAPs, to “reverse-engineer” the advanced machinery and replicate it. He warns that UAPs appear to be attracted to nuclear technology, sometimes interfering with weapons. He claims to have once even discussed setting a “trap” to catch a UAP by using US nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines as bait. And he believes that UAPs have already cost lives. Ten people are said to have died in the “Colares incidents” after being harmed by lasers on a Brazilian island in the 1970s. Many of Elizondo’s assertions rely on unnamed people, who he describes as “credible sources.” But he also believes he’s seen pieces of a UAP himself – and that he’s even handled “alleged alien implants found in humans”.

The possibility of life on other planets is more likely than we know
August 17, 2024, New York Post
https://nypost.com/2024/08/17/opinion/life-on-other-planets...

As the chief scientist of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif. — the world’s leading center for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence — I am convinced that finding life beyond Earth is not a matter of if but a matter of when. As recently as May of this year, scientists discovered a new potentially habitable planet, Gliese 12 b, just 40 light years away. This Earth-sized exoplanet, identified using NASA’s TESS satellite system, orbits a cool red dwarf star and shares intriguing similarities with Venus. Nearly 200 hundred types of prebiotic organic molecules have been detected over decades of astronomical observation in interstellar clouds near the center of our galaxy. They include the kinds of molecules that could play a role in forming amino acids — those building blocks of life. Tens of billions of Earth-sized planets could be located in the habitable zone of sun-like stars in our galaxy alone. Because the probability distribution in nature predicts more puddles than large lakes ... the universe is likely teeming with planets harboring that simple life. Even if only one in a billion of those planets has developed life that’s made it to higher levels of complexity and intelligence, nearly a dozen advanced civilizations could populate our entire galaxy. Even if it were only one per 100 galaxies, there could still be billions of them throughout the cosmos.

Aliens might be living among us disguised as humans — or in a base inside the moon, according to new Harvard study
June 12, 2024, New York Post
https://nypost.com/2024/06/12/us-news/aliens-might-be-living-among...

Aliens might be living among us, according to a study by Harvard academics. The study by Harvard University’s Human Flourishing program further puts forward the idea that UFOs, or unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), may be spaceships visiting their Earth-based alien friends. The researchers have investigated so-called ‘cryptoterrestrials’. These could be disguising themselves as humans to fit in, may have come from Earth’s future or might have descended from intelligent dinosaurs. The study was created to offer an alternate “unconventional” explanation for UAP sightings and to hypothesize what they might mean, and “the possibility that UAP may involve forms of non-human intelligence (NHI) that are already present in Earth’s environment in some sense” that exist “alongside us in distinct stealth”. The paper reads: “The author became increasingly aware of the depth of evidence and theory that also tentatively supports another ultraterrestrial explanation: the “cryptoterrestrial” hypothesis (CTH) – our focus here – which holds that UAP may reflect activities of NHIs concealed here on Earth (e.g., underground) and its environs.”

7 Ridiculous Examples of Government Waste in 2023
January 12, 2024, Foundation for Economic Education
https://fee.org/articles/7-ridiculous-examples-of-government-waste-in-2023/

In his annual Festivus report—named after the fictional Seinfeld holiday—Senator Rand Paul tallies up some of the most egregious examples of government waste from the year. In all, Paul identified $900 billion in government waste from 2023. The national debt continues to skyrocket. One of the many problems with carrying such a heavy debt burden is the sheer volume of money that needs to be spent on interest. The U.S. Department of the Treasury spent $659 billion(!) in Fiscal Year 2023 just on interest payments. The Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has been pursuing some ... creative training programs. In a federally funded workshop last year, CISA employees focused on “effective strategies to build and sustain psychological safety that allows individuals to show up to work as their authentic and best selves.” “Ironically, the workshop coincided with CISA’s efforts to suppress protected speech on social media platforms,” Paul notes. “Even I was censored at the behest of our government speech minders. And all while I thought I was being my best self.” In addition ... CISA has been hard at work creating not one, but two graphic novels about “disinformation” as part of their “Resilience Series.” The first one covers foreign interference in elections. The second covers COVID vaccines. “There is nothing comical about wasting taxpayer money to justify censorship of constitutionally protected speech,” Paul notes in his report.

DOJ’s Healthcare Probes of AI Tools Rooted in Purdue Pharma Case
January 29, 2024, Bloomberg
https://news.bloomberglaw.com/us-law-week/dojs-healthcare-probes...

Justice Department investigators are scrutinizing the healthcare industry’s use of AI embedded in patient records that prompts doctors to recommend treatments. Prosecutors have started subpoenaing pharmaceuticals and digital health companies to learn more about generative technology’s role in facilitating anti-kickback and false claims violations, said three sources familiar with the matter.. Two of the sources—speaking anonymously to discuss ongoing investigations—said DOJ attorneys are asking general questions suggesting they still may be formulating a strategy. “I have seen” civil investigative demands “that ask questions about algorithms and prompts that are being built into EMR systems that may be resulting in care that is either in excess of what would have otherwise been rendered, or may be medically unnecessary,” said Jaime Jones, who co-leads the healthcare practice at Sidley Austin. DOJ attorneys want “to see what the result is of those tools being built into the system.” The probes bring fresh relevance to a pair of 2020 criminal settlements with Purdue Pharma and its digital records contractor, Practice Fusion, over their collusion to design automated pop-up alerts pushing doctors to prescribe addictive painkillers. The kickback scheme ... led to a $145 million penalty for Practice Fusion. Marketers from Purdue ... worked in tandem with Practice Fusion to build clinical decision alerts relying on algorithms.

AI medical devices often aren’t based on real patient data
August 26, 2024, Cosmos (One of Australia’s Leading Science Magazines)
https://cosmosmagazine.com/health/medicine/ai-medical-devices-data-fda/

Nearly half of the AI-based medical devices approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have not been trained on real patient data, according to a new study. The study, published in Nature Medicine, finds that 226 of the 521 devices authorised by the FDA lack published clinical validation data. “Although AI device manufacturers boast of the credibility of their technology with FDA authorisation, clearance does not mean that the devices have been properly evaluated for clinical effectiveness using real patient data,” says first author Sammy Chouffani El Fassi. The US team of researchers examined the FDA’s official “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML)-Enabled Medical Devices” database. “Using these hundreds of devices in this database, we wanted to determine what it really means for an AI medical device to be FDA-authorised,” says Professor Gail Henderson, a researcher at the University of North Carolina’s Department of Social Medicine. Of the 521 devices in this database, just 22 were validated using the “gold standard” – randomised controlled trials, while 43% (226) didn’t have any published clinical validation. Some of these devices used “phantom images” instead – computer-generated images that didn’t come from real patients. The rest of the devices used retrospective or prospective validation – tests based on patient data from the past or in real-time, respectively.

NASA astronaut who watched Earth from space for 178 days realized humanity is 'living a lie'
September 4, 2024, GOOD Magazine
https://www.good.is/when-nasa-astronaut-realized-a-heartbreaking-lie...

Former NASA astronaut Ron Garan ... described the striking beauty and stark reality he witnessed from space. “When I looked out the window of the International Space Station, I saw ... dancing curtains of auroras that seemed so close it was as if we could reach out and touch them,” he exclaimed. He also noticed something concerning. “I saw the unbelievable thinness of our planet's atmosphere,” the astronaut remarked. That “paper-thin” atmosphere is all that stands between humanity and disaster. Garan was troubled by how easily this fact is overshadowed by economic priorities. “I saw an iridescent biosphere teeming with life. I didn't see the economy. But since our human-made systems treat everything, including the very life-support systems of our planet, as the wholly owned subsidiary of the global economy, it's obvious from the vantage point of space that we're living a lie,” he said. He shared the concept of the “overview effect,” something many astronauts feel after they visit space. “It describes the shift that astronauts have when they see the planet hanging in the blackness of space. There's this light bulb that pops up where they realize how interconnected and interdependent we all are,” the astronaut explained. "When we can evolve beyond a two-dimensional us versus them mindset, and embrace the true multi-dimensional reality of the universe that we live in, that's when we're going to no longer be floating in darkness. That's our true calling.”

Robot controlled by a king oyster mushroom blends living organisms and machines
September 4, 2024, CNN News
https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/04/science/fungus-robot-mushroom-biohybrid...

A wheeled bot rolls across the floor. A soft-bodied robotic star bends its five legs, moving with an awkward shuffle. Powered by conventional electricity via plug or battery, these simple robotic creations would be unremarkable, but what sets these two robots apart is that they are controlled by a living entity: a king oyster mushroom. By growing the mushroom’s mycelium, or rootlike threads, into the robot’s hardware, a team led by Cornell University researchers has engineered two types of robots that sense and respond to the environment by harnessing electrical signals made by the fungus and its sensitivity to light. The robots are the latest accomplishment of scientists in a field known as biohybrid robotics who seek to combine biological, living materials such as plant and animal cells or insects with synthetic components to make partly living and partly engineered entities. [Lead author Anand] Mishra engineered an electrical interface that accurately reads the mycelia’s raw electrical activity, then processes and converts it into digital information that can activate the robot’s actuators or moving parts. The robots were able to walk and roll as a response to the electrical spikes generated by the mycelia. [Professor of unconventional computing at the University of the West of England Andrew Adamatzky's] lab has produced more than 30 sensing and computing devices using live fungi, including growing a self-healing skin for robots that can react to light and touch. “When an adequate drivetrain (transmission system) is provided, the robot can, for example, monitor the health of ecological systems. The fungal controller would react to changes, such as air pollution, and guide the robot accordingly,” Adamatzky said.

“Out-of-Body Experiences” Can Lead to Profound and Lasting Psychological Transformations, New Research Reports
September 10, 2024, The Debrief
https://thedebrief.org/out-of-body-experiences-can-lead-to-profound...

A new study from the University of Virginia’s School of Medicine says that out-of-body experiences (OBEs), like near-death experiences, can lead to profound psychological transformations, including increases in empathy and emotional connectivity. The findings ... suggest that these altered states of consciousness transform how people connect with others, fostering greater compassion and understanding. In this state, the sense of self becomes less distinct, allowing individuals to feel a deeper connection to the world around them. “We propose that OBEs might engender these profound changes through the process of ego dissolution,” researchers explained. “Ego dissolution fosters a sense of unity and interconnectedness with others. These sensations of interconnectedness can persist beyond the experience itself.” Researchers report that 55% of individuals who had an out-of-body experience reported that the experience profoundly changed their lives, and 71% described it as having a lasting benefit. The researchers cite numerous personal accounts that illustrate the transformative power of OBEs. One woman described her experience as being surrounded by “100% unconditional love” and feeling deeply connected to everyone and everything around her. “In an instant, I became part of the Universe. I felt connected to everything. Connected to everyone. I was completely surrounded by 100% unconditional love. I did not want to leave!”

Heaven Is Real: A Doctors Experience With the Afterlife
October 8, 2012, Daily Beast/Newsweek
https://www.newsweek.com/proof-heaven-doctors...

As a neurosurgeon, I did not believe in the phenomenon of near-death experiences. In the fall of 2008, however, after seven days in a coma during which the human part of my brain, the neocortex, was inactivated, I experienced something so profound that it gave me a scientific reason to believe in consciousness after death. I had somehow contracted a very rare bacterial meningitis that mostly attacks newborns. E. coli bacteria had penetrated my cerebrospinal fluid and were eating my brain. For seven days I lay in a deep coma, my body unresponsive, my higher-order brain functions totally offline. While the neurons of my cortex were stunned to complete inactivity by the bacteria that had attacked them, my brain-free consciousness journeyed to another, larger dimension of the universe: the same one described by countless subjects of near-death experiences and other mystical states. What I saw and learned there has placed me quite literally in a new world: a world where we are much more than our brains and bodies, and where death is not the end of consciousness but rather a chapter in a vast, and incalculably positive, journey. For most of my journey, someone else was with me. A woman. Without using any words, she spoke to me. The message went through me like a wind, and I instantly understood that it was true. I knew so in the same way that I knew that the world around us was realwas not some fantasy, passing and insubstantial. You are loved and cherished, dearly, forever. You have nothing to fear. There is nothing you can do wrong.
